Living near Nashville has its perks. We’re not far from the Gibson factory and Custom Shop (about 25 mins), which means I frequently see boxes of authentic Gibson parts walk through the door. A lot of people who work at Gibson live in my county, and thus, I have a lot of regulars that either work for, or have worked for Gibson. A recent storage unit auction haul included several samples, templates, and new old stock parts from the 1950s through the 1990s.
This is a roughed out, but not completed maple Gibson Custom Shop Super 400 pickguard made of flame maple. This one is from the earliest years of the Gibson Custom Shop. I suspect this was a test run or prototype - not entirely sure why the Flour de Lis has never been routed and inlayed.
Anyway you slice it, this is a really neat little piece of Gibson Custom Shop history.
